A Place to Contact Light Privately @ 08:37 am
April 21, 2007: In attempting to contact all the SG DiversiFICation Awards authors nominated, it occurred to me that a post specifically for people to contact me would be nice and if that post had comments screened, it would be even nicer. You need to ask me something, but don't want to do it in public? Or you just need to get hold of me? Here it is. Comments are screened and it's forward-dated so it should always be at the top of my LJ.

A silly little chat thing @ 11:12 am
Was sorting through my fic index and ran across this thing, titled "The Trouble with M/M Slash" which was basically a chat log from, oh, a year or more ago. Thought I'd post it here for folks' amusement.
( Rants about men leading to fannish silliness ahoy! )

Amazon Using Strong-Arm Tactics on POD Publishers @ 09:53 am
Several websites have reported on this, but it hasn't hit all the mainstream press sites. Seems Amazon has been contacting publishers who have their print-on-demand books printed by Lightning Source or Lulu or the like and telling them they need to switch to Amazon's own BookSurge ( If they don't, their Buy button on their Amazon page will be turned off. )

About the Content Strike @ 08:04 pm
So, there's this content strike, where people are supposed to forego posting posts or comments or anything this Friday, March 21. A lot of people are going, "Dude, we'll show them!" and others are comparing it to the one-day gas boycotts that do absolutely nothing. I went and commented to a poll by one of the "This is stupid" people and thought I'd post it here as well. ( Here goes. )
So there you have it. Am I going to strike? I don't know yet. But if I do, you won't be seeing me posting extra on the day before and after. And since it's my anniversary *and* Good Friday, like as not I wouldn't be posting much anyway.
What I Wrote on the Discussion of the Loss of Free Accounts @ 02:42 pm
This was over in the comments to the news post where LJ basically said, "Yeah, we didn't tell you the right way. Deal with it." It was in response to someone who didn't get why the loss of free accounts wasn't a good thing-- losing the 'freeloaders' and troublemakers. It's on the first page if y'all want to go read it in context, but I thought I'd post it here as well. ( So, here's what I wrote. )

House episodes @ 04:28 pm
Current Mood: annoyed
Okay, now I'm seriously annoyed. Because the Superbowl ran over and I wasn't home, we recorded 35 minutes of post-game and 25 minutes of Frozen and didn't catch the last half and I just now sat down to watch "Don't Ever Change" and bad weather caused a loss in satellite signal, losing the last 20 minutes or so completely. Okay, flist, anyone know where I can DL eps of House?

Stargate Fan Awards @ 10:23 am
So, I have some stories nominated for the 2007 Stargate Fan Awards.
Here's a list of my nominations:
Children of the Future in the category: SGA Fan Fiction > Gen > Character > McKay > Drama
The Geometry of Desire series in the category: SGA Fan Fiction > Multiples > Threesomes and Moresomes > Strictly Slash
Gossip in the category: SGA Fan Fiction > Multiples > Threesomes and Moresomes > Sheppard/Weir/McKay
Spectrum in the category: SGA Fan Fiction > Ship > McKay/Weir > Romantic
Sword Dance in the category: SGA Fan Fiction > Ship > Other Pairing
I'd like to thank whoever nominated me for the awards. I'm touched (and a bit surprised (but in a good way) by some of the older works included). Thank you!
These are up against some stiff competition-- very excellent stories by some top-of-the-line authors. And these categories are just a handful of the ones in the competition. As well as fiction, there are categories for fanart, videos, and other multimedia in both SGA and SG-1 (and crossovers)-- something like 2400 entries total.
So go read the fic, gaze at the artworks and videos and other things, and then vote for the absolute best. Voting goes till March 3, but there's so much to read and view that I'd advise everyone to start early!
Don't just go vote for your favourite authors, artists, vidders, etc. Go vote for the best in the category.

Fic: First chapter of No Precious Time posted to my LJ clones @ 06:20 pm
I have accounts under the username 'thetimebeing' at greatestjournal, insanejournal, and journalfen. You should be able to find the fic readily enough. See my earlier post for why it will not be posted to LJ.
For those without accounts on those other services who would like to comment non-anonymously, feel free to do so here.
I'm about to post "Child Porn" on my other LJ clones but not here @ 09:11 am
Current Mood: cynical
According to LJ's recent not-anywhere-in-the-TOS "policy clarifications" the fic I've been working on for months now, starting long before those "clarifications" were made and intended for expectanything, is "child pornography". This is because it mentions teenagers who are still minors having sex. While LJ has said in various places that fiction generally doesn't qualify as child porn, they've been notoriously bad at saying one thing ("As long as there's something in the post specifying those persons pictured are over 18, you're okay") and then turning around and banninating people who thought they were in compliance with LJ's we-can't-really-explain-it policies ("We looked at the drawing of completely fictional people you made that you said were all over 18 and decided one of them didn't look over 18, more like 16, so we're deleting every single journal you own, even though some of them are paid and/or permanent"). LJ's abuse team has shown absolutely no concept of "fictional" and the artistic sensibilities of a warthog and a willingness to call anyone questioning or trying to clarify their stance child pornographers and pedophiles. Since this "policy clarification" to justify and perpetrate their fraud was effected and their insulting and libellous labelling of their userbase, I immediately switched all my plus RPG journals to unpaid and allowed this journal to lapse from paid to unpaid basic and my payment for extra icons to also lapse. LJ is not getting one red cent from me as long as these policies are in effect, not even through hosting advertising on my page. I would encourage everyone to follow suit. Therefore, even though this fic was intended for expectanything, it will not be posted there. It will not be posted here, either. If you want to read it, you'll have to look up my journals-- all of them bearing the username 'thetimebeing'-- on greatestjournal, insanejournal, and journalfen. In accordance with LJ's also-not-in-the-TOS requirement that you can't even text-link to material that cannot be posted to LJ (Does this mean one can't text-link to any copyrighted material, since posting it to your LJ would be a violation of copyright?), I will not even be posting a link to it. Y'all will just have to go find it at thetimebeing's journals. I will be making a post here when I do place it on my other LJ clones in order for LJ users who don't have accounts on any of those other services to comment non-anonymously. Keep your eyes open for it. It will probably be later today or tomorrow. The fic is complete, not a WIP. It is 65,000+ words (though I've been told by several people that it reads fast) and 28 chapters. I'll be posting one a day. Because it was intended for expectanything, there won't be any warnings as to content that would spoil the fic or pairing listings in the post itself. I will be making a specific warning post that will be backdated and LJ-cut so people won't stumble across it accidentally and be spoiled for the fic if they'd prefer not to be. Keep in mind that the teens-having-sex is not a major part of the fic, is not generally graphic in nature or dwelt upon, is not intended to encourage teen sex or titillate the reader, but is a vital part of one of the central conflicts that drive the plot. I.e. it's only child porn in LJ's convoluted understanding of the term, where fictional teenagers must somehow be more protected than some real, living teenaged LJ users are. Please, don't ask for me to post it "because LJ abuse will probably never see it anyway." I don't trust them. I don't like their policies. I don't like being libelled. I'm only still here because of my flist and because my maintaining a journal here uses up their resources without much return on their investment.

So Much Yes @ 11:13 am
Site administrators use CAPTCHAs to prevent automated scripts from performing certain functions, such as creating an account, sending email to a distribution list, or participating in a discussion thread.
That's fine, as far as it goes. But, frankly, I'd also like to see certain people on the Internet prevented from doing certain things. You know, like: logging onto the Internet.
And so, a modest proposal: Internet Access Captchas, built right into browsers, designed to greatly reduce the overabundance of youtube commenters, MySpacers, and bloggers.
Go here to see their prototype plan.

Sad News for Joe Flanigan/John Sheppard Fans @ 03:30 pm
I have discovered from watching this video on youtube that apparently the evil reptilian overlords can often be recognised by their tongue-flicking ways. Since Joe Flanigan is a frequent tongue-flicker, I have come to the sad conclusion that he is, in fact, one of Them, along with the Bushes, Larry King, Dick Cheney, and the royal family of England.
I'm sure some thought will reveal what the evil reptilian Illuminati plot would be that would require one of their shape-shifting members to take a job on a science fiction television show.

Well Isn't That Special? @ 12:35 am
Amidst wank in the House fandom about a plagiarist, I ran across this video on youtube-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bthoLZaEuo
Those slides look suspiciously like icons I've seen around LJ and clones, including, you know, my icon above which can be seen at 1:00 on the vid.
And here I always figured it would be my stories that got stolen. Of course, I can't really yell plagiarism because my icon is based on a screencap of a show I certainly don't own and all I did was crop it and add text, so I'm more amused than upset.
In looking at her collection of videos, we also have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXcRfamNr3c and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDQ80nKRd6o and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY4NF-pDAfY though the last two don't appear to have many icons used that I can see. Oh... and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9cLB-aegl4 which appears to use a lot of walls and the like.
