Fic: Predator-Prey (PG) @ 02:28 am

Title: Predator-Prey
Author: SGAtlantisLight
Characters: McKay, Sheppard, Beckett, Everett, Dex, Stackhouse, Lorne, Emmagan
Relationships: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: PG for this part, but series as a whole is NC-17
Warnings: A bit of suspense, scientific babble
Spoilers: None (well, okay, there are a couple of lines of dialogue from an episode, but not likely to mean anything to anyone who hasn't seen it).
Summary: Part 14 of the Unified Theory series-- an AU where Everett was never drained by the Wraith and kept his position as military commander of Atlantis.
Disclaimer: The characters, the setting, etc. are NOT mine, even if I wish they were.

John had dreamed again in the night and had curled into his arms easily when Rodney tried to comfort him. Rodney awoke with John still clinging and peered at the clock. It was later than he'd wanted. He nudged his husband.

"Mmnguh?" John said.

"Get up. We need to check on Carson."

"Mpf. Mmmhm." John rolled out of bed and padded to the bathroom, emerging a moment later, running a hand through his hair, tousselling it further. He looked delicious in a befuddled way and Rodney wished they could stay.

Instead, he took a moment to relieve himself and pull on clothes and they both headed out the door.

Carson wasn't answering his door and a quick glance at a borrowed life-signs detector indicated he wasn't home, so they headed to the infirmary.

"Carson here?" Rodney asked Biro as they walked in.

She motioned to his office.

Rodney walked in without knocking and froze at the sight in front of him. Carson sat with a pharmacy bottle in his hand, longing in his eyes. Rodney could see the letters "Dexe" on the label. He leapt forward and knocked the bottle out of Carson's hand. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" he yelled as Carson startled. "You were going to self-medicate, weren't you? Dammit, Carson, you know you can't do that. I know your history and you can't waste, what would it be now, ten years and a couple of months? You can't--"

Carson's eyes met his, stricken.

"Oh, God. It's too late, isn't it? You already took them."

***

Everett's team had spent the day searching for survivors. There had obviously been some sort of resistance put up because the wraith had not merely culled, but had attempted to obliterate the entire civilisation. They'd done a decent job, too, if the handful of survivors was any indication.

"I've got another one!" Ronon called, shifting a large piece of rubble, the muscles in his back and shoulders bunching with the effort.

Everett walked over and knelt down, seeing a delicate, but bloodless hand. "She's dead," he said.

"No. Listen," Ronon said.

Everett fell silent. The place was eerily quiet-- wind and the distant crackling of fires that still hadn't died out. For a moment, he didn't hear it, and then he caught a soft inhalation. Someone was under the rubble. "Damn! Crown, Majeski, anyone else able-bodied, get over here!"

***

Stackhouse bowed to the doyenne. "Thank you for your hospitality. We will convey your greetings and well-wishes to our leader. I'm certain she will be interested in seeking a closer relationship with your people."

The doyenne smiled. "I look forward to her visit. I hope you will be returning with her as well?" She gave a significant look to her granddaughter, who leered suggestively at him.

"That is for Doctor Weir to determine," Corrigan interjected. "We will do her bidding in the matter."

"Ah, a strong leader." The doyenne nodded approvingly. "It will be a most auspicious meeting, I am certain."

The men all bowed to her and then to the other women of the counsel, then turned and left. When they had walked out of earshot, Yamato said quietly, "I sincerely hope Doctor Weir doesn't make us come back here."

Corrigan chuckled. "I think it's just perfect for Cadman's team, though."

"Though I feel sorry for Sergeant Cole," Parker said, smiling.

"Ah, he'll live. He deals with three women on his team already. This can't be anymore terrifying than the combined cunning of Cadman, Dekker and Simpson," Stackhouse said.

All four men nodded.

***

Miller rolled his eyes. Yesterday had been a bust and today looked the same. There had been a hive ship on this planet, but it was long-gone now and didn't appear to have left anyone behind. "Come on, Parrish, it's time to go home."

"But this is a Craigia bronni, Lieutenant."

Miller exchanged mystified looks with Reed and Sherman. "Sorry, I don't understand the significance. It's just a plant."

"On Earth, this species is long extinct. In fact, it's only recently that paleobotanists have determined the Pteleaecarpum bronnii, Ulmis bronnii, and Tilia gieskei were the same species. This is a significant find." He stood, surveying the area. "I'd love to take a sample, but I'm not seeing any others. Perhaps you could aid me in a s--?" His voice died as all three of the other men suddenly leveled weapons in his direction.

***

Lorne stretched and rolled out of the hammock-like contraption that served as beds here, wincing as muscles protested. It was probably a good thing McKay hadn't been here. He nudged Lipski awake and then headed out to check on Teyla.

She was already out of her hut, quietly conversing with the women preparing food in the center of the village.

"They're not letting you cook, are they?" he teased.

She cast him a dangerous look. "No. I am not permitted, since I am a guest." She looked behind him and nodded. "Good morning, Sous-lieutenant Tavernier."

Lorne turned. "Tavernier! You're awake awfully early on the morning after your wedding night..."

"I needed to tell you something, Major." He motioned with his head away from the knot of busy village women.

Lorne followed him out of earshot of the others. "What is it?" he asked quietly.

"I've found out the secret of their wild warriors," Tavernier said, glancing around nervously.

***

"We need to get her back to the infirmary," Everett said, holding the broken body of the little girl that had been mostly obscured by the body of a woman who was probably her mother.

Ronon nodded. "Some of the others should probably be treated, too."

"Do you suppose there's more?"

Ronon shook his head. "This kind of destruction, it's amazing we found as many as we did. Anyone who was mobile probably fled through the gate."

Crown walked up with a life-signs detector. "That's it, sir, though there may be others in the more distant towns and cities. They're less likely to have escaped through the stargate."

Everett nodded. Could they afford to bring teams to search the ruins of an entire civilisation? Could they afford not to? "I'll suggest it to Doctor Weir."

"We've got a dart!" Majeski called, seconds before the screech could be heard.

The survivors scattered, diving for cover. Everett looked helplessly at the girl in his lap. "Take that thing down, now!" he ordered.

***

Miller's team spilled through the gate, panting, turning with weapons leveled behind them. Before Lenoir could activate the shield, a snarling animal followed them through. A rain of bullets took it down at once.

"What the hell were those things?" Miller asked, staring at the horse-sized creature.

"Hyaenodon gigas," Parrish supplied, his voice full of awe, "the largest terrestrial mammalian predator known. The whole planet is like a living Oligocene Epoch."

"I thought plants were your thing," Reed said.

Parrish shrugged. "You pick up bits and pieces of other disciplines in your studies. We really should radio Doctor Parmenter. She'll be delighted."

Sherman shook his head. "Leave it to a scientist to get excited about being nearly eaten by a giant hyena."

***

"We're leaving now," Lorne said through gritted teeth.

"But, Major--" Teyla started to object.

"Tavernier is not, I repeat, not going through any damned wild warrior initiation rite and I don't care what sort of a scene we cause getting him out of here. Kapische?"

She looked at him mystified.

"Never mind. Let's go."

***

"How could you?" Rodney asked. "Ten years, Carson, ten years!"

"Ten years, three months, and seven days," Carson answered and opened up his hand. There in his hand were two capsules, wet and sticking to his skin. "Assuming it still counts," Carson added. "I couldn't bring myself to swallow."

Rodney sagged, then reached down and dragged Carson out of the chair and into his arms. "It counts... It counts."

John stepped up behind him and slipped one arm around Rodney's waist and placed the other hand on Carson's shoulder. "It's going to be okay. We're going to help you through this."

Carson nodded and then began shaking. "She's dead. Oh, dear God in heaven, she's dead!"

Helplessly, Rodney held him as Carson's tears soaked into his tee shirt.

The door swung open behind them. Biro's voice spoke quietly. "They're calling for a medical team to the gate room. Everett's team brought back some injured from the planet they were on... and a wraith. I can go--"

"No!" Carson said, stepping back and wiping his eyes. "I'll go. I'm the one to be dealing with the wraith."

***

"Arggh! You will die for this! Others will come for me! They will destroy you!" the wraith screamed, fighting his bonds.

"Blah, blah, blah," John said.

"They have to find us first," Ronon said, then shot the wraith.

Carson quickly inserted a hypodermic into its forearm and began drawing out the yellow-orange enzyme.

"We're going to need a name," Everett said, considering the creature.

John nodded. "How does Mike sound?"

Oh wow! So much going on! I'm glad they got a Wraith, but oh man...
Poor Carson! He's gone for so long without and now... I know John and Rodney will help him through this...
*Giggles* Go Lorne!

Ugh! So many more things I'm thinking of, but I can't put them into words... I LOVED the chapter! Can't wait to read more!

Thanks! Yeah, you gotta figure there are going to be a lot of people surrounding Carson with a lot of support rather quickly.

And I love writing Lorne getting all macho. Quite a contrast from the guy who threw up all over his shoes upon seeing a dead body back in the SG1 days.

Whew. Close call, Carson.

"We're going to need a name," Everett said, considering the creature.

John nodded. "How does Mike sound?"

Somehow, that particular line hits home harder than some of the others. They're just so damn casual about the whole thing, which shows just how far they've gone.

Also, it shows the change in John, who's been rather skeptic to the Wraith policy just until now... now he's not only tolerating, but accepting it. *shudders*

OK...so that didn't mean what I originally thought it would mean...but atleast Carson didn't go through with it and he will have support.

Hmm...who's this survivor is...but I guess I'll just have to wait won't I?

Gah...you made me cry AGAIN though. I'm a sucker for your ficcies I guess.

Atleast now they've got a wraith and poor Ford won't go all nutters...but I'll agree with the others...there was just something about that last line.

More please!! :-)

Lovely chapter with lots of interesting action. So glad you had Carson spit the tablets out, and very nice scene between him and the boys. I'm really curious what the initiation rite was that freaked out Lorne so much.

And if I were a paleontologist, I'd be creaming myself over the planet Miller and Parrish were on. :)

And, yeah, that would be one cool planet. Too bad Parrish was the only one to appreciate it.
