Disclaimer: The characters, the setting, etc. are NOT mine, even if I wish they were.

Carson emerged from surgery on Simpson and immediately found a chair to collapse into. Biro and Tardiff had handled the other cases, leaving Carson to deal with Simpson.

The waiting room was filled with people-- Cole, Everett, Kavanagh, Kusanagi, Elizabeth, John and Rodney.

"How is she?" Elizabeth asked.

"There was an intestinal perforation that we missed the first time around. Took a bit to find, but it's closed now. The Ancient scanner has confirmed it. I've got her on a broad-spectrum antibiotic. We'll keep an eye out for infection all the same. It'll be a wee bit before she's recovered from the anesthesia."

Elizabeth nodded. "Good. I've already gotten reports from Biro and Tardiff on our guests. So, at this point, I've got four off-world teams to debrief, so if you'll excuse me."

Everyone bid her goodbye. Kavanagh exchanged a significant look with Everett. "Hey, could you call me when Simpson's awake?" he asked.

Carson nodded. "I'll do that."

"Great. Thanks."

He stood carefully, tucking his crutches under him, and headed off with Everett by his side.

Carson turned to Cole and Kusanagi. "I'll call ye both, too, when she's awake. There's no need to stay here."

Cole stood. "Take good care of her, doc. She's the only teammate I've got left."

"I will, son." There was a quaver in Carson's voice.

Miko stood and shyly patted Carson's arm before nodding and exiting.

"Were you two waiting for news on Dr. Simpson?" Carson asked, rubbing his eyes.

"We were waiting on you," John answered.

"You look like hell," Rodney said. "Did you sleep at all last night?"

"No, I didn't. I couldn't," Carson admitted.

"You've got to sleep, Carson," Rodney chided. "You've got good staff. Let them take over for a while."

"My bed smells like her."

The two considered the portrait of misery before them. John stood and took Carson's shoulder. "I've got a futon in my home office. It's pretty comfortable. Come on."

Carson resisted for a moment, and then nodded. "Let me leave some instructions with Doctor Biro first."

***

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Weir said as Miller's team filed out.

"It really is paleologically important," Parrish re-emphasised. "We should definitely look into it more."

"Thank you, doctor. I'll keep that under consideration," Weir nodded. She watched them walk away, and then hit her radio. "Weir to Stackhouse. Sergeant, I'm ready for you now."

***

"He's out like a light," John reported.

"That's good," Rodney said, sitting down on their couch.

John sat down beside him and flung an arm out along the back, behind Rodney, then seemed to become aware of the juvenile "getting to first base" feel of the move. He started to move away, then realised he didn't have to.

Rodney rolled his eyes and settled against John, who hesitantly slipped both arms around him. "Is this okay?" John asked.

"Of course it is. We're having sex and you still have problems with cuddling?"

"Well, I just... I mean... Most guys..."

"I'm not most guys."

John chuckled. "I noticed." His fingers brushed lightly over Rodney's ribs, pausing to explore the circular scar there, detectable even through Rodney's tee shirt.

Rodney shivered slightly, and then relaxed against John. "My ribs there ache sometimes when it rains, or is about to rain."

"Sensitive to the drop in barometric pressure," John said. "My dad had a trick knee-- old football injury-- that did that."

"Tell me about him," Rodney said.

"My dad? He was a pilot in the Air Force. Kind of strict and distant and... Well, I hardly ever remember him being happy. My grandmother told me he was different before my mom died."

"How'd she die?"

"Having me," John answered, a strange tinge of guilt in his voice. "My grandmother-- dad's mother-- lived with us and took care of us, since he was gone so much."

"Us?" Rodney asked.

"My brother Robbie and I. He was ten years older. Died when I was 16. Took a bullet meant for me."

"God! I'm sorry."

John shrugged. "It made it easier to decide to come here to Atlantis. No one to miss me on Earth."

"Your father and grandmother are dead, too?"

"Yeah. Grandma died of a stroke when I was in college. Dad died of cancer five years ago."

Rodney considered. While he and Jeannie weren't close, there had been a certain comfort in knowing she was there, carrying on the family line. "No family," he murmured.

John's arms slipped more tightly around him, lips pressing against his neck. "I've got you."

***

Elizabeth stared at Sous-lieutenant Claude Tavernier in shock. "How many?"

"I saw ten and told there were more."

"That would explain their ferocity," Teyla said.

Lorne nodded. "It stands to reason that someone would have discovered the effects of the enzyme besides us."

Elizabeth turned and looked at Teyla. "But you didn't sense anything?"

"I did not."

"The holding area was in an underground facility that looked Ancient in the design," Tavernier said. "There was the energy field around the cell. It is possible this is why, yes?"

"Entirely possible." Elizabeth nodded.

"We could trade for enzyme," Lipski said.

"And I expect Doctor McKay would be quite interested in this anti-telepathy field or whatever it is," Elizabeth added.

"I doubt we would be welcomed back," Teyla said. "We did leave in the middle of their festival and before Sous-lieutenant Tavernier could be inducted into their wild warriors."

"I wasn't going to bring another enzyme addict back to Atlantis," Lorne said.

Teyla smiled reassuringly. "I was not questioning your decision, Major, merely pointing out that because of it, the reception is likely to be... very cold."

Elizabeth nodded. "However, it is a significant opportunity. Perhaps if we sent a different team... and attempted to avoid Tavernier's faux pas, if we can determine what it was."

The Frenchman looked offended. "I merely asked about the wraith sightings."

"That's all?" Elizabeth asked, fixing him with a pointed gaze.

Tavernier shrugged eloquently. "I might also have mentioned something about hunting them."

Carson started awake and blinked, trying to place himself. Not his bed. Not Laura's.

Laura...

The events of the past couple of days suddenly crashed in on him, shocking him into full wakefulness with a sob. He curled into the bed-- futon, he corrected himself.

Laura was dead. Laura was dead. Laura was dead.

It didn't make any sense.

A soft moan reached his ears and he stilled, listening.

"Holy fuck! Rodney..." John's voice gasped.

There was a slight wet slurpy sound. "Sorry," Rodney's voice said, low and husky. "Not in any way sanctified."

"Oh, God, keep doing that. God, yes... Nnnngg... Rodneyyyy..."

Well, that answered that question. John had seemed so mystified when Carson had asked him a couple of fairly standard questions during his last physical that Carson had wondered. He knew, of course, that not every couple engaged in every possible activity, but still...

Rodney growled. "Lube's in the bedroom, dammit. Come on."

Carson shook his head. It was to be expected, he supposed. The two had only been married a little over a month and had just had a major scare. He and Laura had actually started to get to that comfortable stage where they'd tried most everything they were interested in trying and sex had become a comfortable routine.

God, he was never going to have that again!

The tears came again and he curled into a miserable ball and cried until sleep wrapped comforting arms around him and let him forget for a while.

"MX7-252 had been culled and bombarded from space," Everett reported.

"They obviously put up some kind of resistance," Ronon said. "The wraith don't eliminate a food source otherwise."

"It might be worth going back to see if we can determine what sort of resistance," Everett continued. "From what we could see post-devastation, it looked like late Renaissance or early industrial-- hardly the technology level you'd expect to inspire that sort of reprisal."

"Not to mention," Crown added, "that there were other cities further from the gate that might still have survivors."

"Not likely," Ronon said.

"And it's likely they may send more scouts to be certain the job was done right," Everett said. "Especially when the one dart doesn't return."

Elizabeth nodded. "We need to add it to the agenda for the next senior staff meeting, but I don't believe we should be risking resources at this time."

"You also need to consider what to do with the survivors," Everett said.

She nodded. "Perhaps the Athosians would take them in, since there's so few."

***

"Carson?" Rodney's voice called, a warm hand on his shoulder.

He blinked awake. The memories returned faster this time, but the pain was duller as well.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" Rodney asked, worry in his eyes.

"Fine," he answered automatically.

"It's dinnertime. Did you want to come down to the cafeteria or would you like to eat here?"

Carson thought about the laughter and conversation and... normalcy that the cafeteria would present and couldn't stand it. Laura was dead and that should have changed the world somehow-- darkened the sky, silenced the laughter. "I'm not really hungry."

"You can't live on spit and grief," John said from behind Rodney. "I'll go get something, okay?"

Carson nodded.

"Any preferences, Rodney?" John asked.

Rodney waved. "You know me-- something safe and not too high on the carbs. Oh, and Jell-O if they've got it."

"Blue," John said, grinning.

Rodney returned the grin. "Yes."

"How 'bout you, Carson? Anything that sounds less awful than anything else?"

Carson shook his head.

"Okay. I'll be back."

They watched him leave, and then Rodney turned to Carson. "Are you...? Do you need to...?" Rodney sighed. "I'll listen, you know."

Carson couldn't help but give him an amused look. "Thank you, Rodney. But for now I just want to..." He shrugged. "I don't know. Just not think too hard about it, I suppose."

"Okay," Rodney said. "Maybe you'd like to... um... play chess or watch a movie or something?"

"I don't know," Carson answered. "Just don't make me make decisions right now. I can't."

Rodney considered him a moment, then nodded. "A mindless movie, then." Rodney started thumbing through the DVDs they had and stopped at John's copy of Blues Brothers. "I think I have just the thing."

***

The wraith stood in the cell and sniffed. It smelled like death. One of his brothers had died here-- starved. One of his own hive.

He glared at the soldier standing guard. "You will all pay for what you have done."

***

"Hut-hut, hut-hut," the SWAT team was whispering on the screen.

Carson was smiling, chuckling, then his smile slid away and tears were spilling down his face, as he folded into Rodney.

"Carson?" John asked, looking at Rodney mystified.

The only answer was a sob.

Rodney gathered Carson closer, looking a bit uncomfortable. He couldn't say it would be okay or he understood or any of those other platitudes, so he just held on, rocking Carson slightly.

"Oh, God," Carson gasped into his tee shirt. "She was always doing that. I never knew where it was from." He let out another sob. "I don't know what to do... How do ye live?"

John laid a hand on Carson's shoulder. "You cry when you need to, laugh when you can, and lean on your friends."

***

Teyla's eyes snapped open, the feelings of rage and hunger still making her heart pound. She sat up, curled into herself. It had started again.

I'm sorry that I haven't commented before, but I just got an account. I have read every single one of your stories and I have to say that I really love this one. I enjoy the way you touch on each character during the course of the story. I also love the way John has been somewhat befuddled in keeping with his absence. I adore you take on Rodney and I ache for Carson.
