The days crawled past, blurring together for Carson. John and Rodney stood by him as he struggled through Laura's and Jamie's funerals. John offered his futon up for use whenever Carson needed it, though more often than not he found a spare bed in the infirmary or simply fell asleep from exhaustion at his desk. They dragged him away from work for meals and downtime.

Elizabeth took to checking in with him in the afternoons, the softness in her eyes making him want to break down. He was gruff with her, refusing her offers to let him have more time off. Some of his research was time-sensitive, he explained. She accepted it, though he could see in her eyes she didn't believe him.

Ronon Dex appeared every couple of days and scowled until Carson left his desk to get some sleep. Dillon Everett and Liam Kavanagh always stopped to talk when they visited Simpson.

Aiden Ford looked devastated every time he arrived in the infirmary for a dose. After one tense session together, Carson let the other doctors or a nurse handle it and tried to fight the sudden surge of anger that flashed through him whenever he looked at the former Marine.

Teyla, showing increasing signs of sleep deprivation, was often by Carson's side, eating with him and checking on him in the mornings before training sessions. In some ways, he found himself unburdening to her more than to anyone else. She'd lost people to the wraith as he had. She was sympathetic without it spilling over into pity, listening without judgement, calming when the grief crushed down on his chest till there was nothing for him to do but weep.

The 12-Step meeting where he confessed how close he'd come to falling was strangely gratifying as he was surrounded by men and women of all sorts of experiences, just listening and accepting. After that, Carson could hardly walk down a corridor without being stopped by someone checking up on him. He'd glanced up at the meeting to find Kavanagh incongruously setting the alarm on his watch.

***

Rodney was jarred out of his concentration by the high-pitched insistent beeping. He'd been annoyed at the hourly alarm on Kavanagh's watch going off all the time until he'd realised that the scientist would crutch away to a quiet corner as soon after as possible and make a comm call. The next time it happened, he'd strained his ears and had made out, "... Beckett? ... Kavanagh. How are you doing?"

After that, he stopped rolling his eyes at the annoyance and would surreptitiously watch Kavanagh's reaction to the call. Twice, the scientist excused himself early from work after a call, blaming pain. Rodney complained, even as his eyes conveyed his thanks. Both times, Carson arrived at their door later that evening, dark circles under his eyes, asking to borrow John's futon.

He untensed as he saw Kavanagh nod and relax. Today had been a good Carson day.

***

Stackhouse's team arrived back from negotiations looking grim. There would be no meetings until Claude of the planet France was returned to complete his initiation into the Wild Warriors.

***

MX7-252 revealed only a couple of more survivors and no technology that would explain the vicious destruction visited on them by the wraith. Carson and Dr. Corrigan, however, were growing more fascinated by the survivors and their society, but weren't ready to reveal their theories.

***

"Come on, sweetie," John said, holding his hand out to the little girl. Hesitantly, she took his hand. "Okay, folks, follow me and we'll get you settled."

The Palani grabbed up their rucksacks and followed John out of the jumper. Rodney took up the rear, glancing around to make sure nothing had been left behind before following the refugees who were being taken in by the Athosians. John's dark hair and complexion blended in with most of the refugees, though he didn't sport the coloured tips that seemed to be the fashion among them. The little girl who walked hand in hand with him was an exception, her hair almost white by comparison, the ends tipped in pink and purple. A slender man with colouring closer to Rodney's, hair tipped in greens and blues, walked in the middle of the pack.

Rodney wondered for a moment about the genetics. If he recalled correctly, the paler colourations were recessive. He supposed they were simply rare among the people of the devastated world.

Halling approached, looking a bit stiff, Jinto at his side and others trailing behind. "Major, or, rather Doctor Sheppard," he greeted, nodding.

"Halling! It's been a while. Sorry we missed you last time," John answered, smiling, then moved to ruffle Jinto's hair. "Hey, kiddo. Have you still got that football I gave you?"

Jinto's face lit up. "Yes, Maj-- er, Doctor."

"Call me John. We'll have to be sure to try a few passes later or maybe get your friends together and try a real game."

Halling flashed a brief, tense smile, and then turned to Rodney. "Doctor McKay, it is good to see you as well."

Rodney nodded. "Good to see you, Halling."

John knelt down next to the little girl. "Mirial, this is Halling and Jinto. You're going to be living with them. They told our friend Teyla that they needed a woman to take care of them. Do you think you can do that for them?"

Mirial studied them, her face serious. Halling knelt down till he was on level with the girl, smiling warmly. "Mirial, we have been waiting anxiously for you to come to us since Teyla told us of you. I have something for you. It belonged to my daughter." He produced a wrapped bundle and handed it to her.

Mirial carefully pulled away the cloth to reveal a small wooden doll. It appeared that her hair was human and the joints were articulated. The face was carved and delicately painted. Mirial ran a finger through the hair, and then looked up at Halling. "What happened to your daughter?" she asked.

"She was taken by the wraith many years ago," Halling answered.

She considered this, looking at the doll. "They killed my mommy." Tears sprang to her eyes.

"I know," Halling answered. "Come. We can be sad together." He held out his arms.

She hugged the doll to her and stepped into his embrace, burying her face in his shoulder. He scooped her up and stood. "If you'll excuse me," he said to them, then turned and walked to his hut.

Charin stepped forward, smiling. "Come. Let us find places for the rest of you and then we will all eat together."

***

Radek sat down across from Miko and Simpson. Miko smiled shyly at him while Simpson merely nodded and returned to her food. She'd only been released from the infirmary a couple of days before. It was strange to see her so quiet and pale and still. Miko cast her a concerned look, then went back to eating.

"Oh, Doctor Kusanagi, I almost forgot," Radek said, breaking the silence, "I got copy of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. You mentioned once you wanted to see it."

Both women looked up and Radek noted the flash of interest in Simpson's eyes-- the first he'd seen since the death of her teammates. He'd hoped to watch the movie alone with Miko, but now he changed his mind.

"I could arrange to use the rec room with the big screen. We could make it a science section movie night. What do the two of you think?"

Miko looked over at Simpson, hope in her eyes. "That could be fun, don't you think?"

Simpson nodded slowly. "Yeah. Maybe."

"Good!" Radek said before she could change her mind. "We'll plan on it, then."

***

John sighed, enjoying the brush of the sea air against his overheated skin and Rodney's solid bulk against him. He knew they should go wash the semen and lube from their bodies, get dressed, and return to the settlement, but was too sated to move. "Hey, Rodney?"

"Hm?" Rodney answered, curling closer.

"Do you think Halling was acting a little strange?"

Rodney sat up enough to lean his head on his hand and look at him. "What do you mean?"

"I don't know. He just acted a little stiff."

Rodney shrugged. "Probably just nervous."

"So you don't think it had anything to do with us?"

"Huh. Hadn't thought of that. Teyla seems okay with it, though. I guess I was just assuming it wasn't a problem with the Athosians."

But when they dressed and returned to the settlement, both men found themselves watching the faces of the people there. As John reached out and took Rodney's hand, bringing it to his lips for a quick kiss, he noted several people look away, while others stared-- some in unabashed shock, others in curiosity.

"Okay, so I was wrong," Rodney said.

"Yeah," John said. "Unfortunately."

***

"It's among the planets in the database that had Ancient facilities on it, but there are no details beyond that," Elizabeth explained.

"My people have not traded there to my knowledge," Teyla said.

"Dex and Ford don't have any info on it either," Everett added

"Any chance for a ZedPM out of it?" Rodney asked.

"We're hoping there might be a ZeePM, yes," Elizabeth answered, "but the database is really too vague to be certain."

"MALP readings?" Lorne asked.

"No sign of habitation near the gate," Everett answered. "Deciduous forest, full summer foliage, hilly to mountainous, temperatures in the 70s."

Lorne nodded. "All right, if that's it, we'll meet in the jumper bay in an hour."

***

"Why did we have to park so far away?" Rodney muttered, ducking under a hanging vine.

"Closest practical landing site to the ridge," Lorne answered.

Rodney studied the readings he was getting. "Ah, it doesn’t matter now; I think we’re almost there."

"Rodney, do you even know what it is we are looking for?" Teyla asked.

"Yeah, well, whatever it is, it’s around here somewhere."

"What’s around here, Rodney?" John asked, annoyed.

Rodney waved vaguely, still studying his scanner device. "Whatever it was that was causing the energy spike we detected from the Puddlejumper."

"Any idea what that would look like, McKay?" Lorne asked.

"Is it bigger than a breadbox?" John added.

Rodney glared at them. "I’ll know it when I see it." He looked at the scanner, turned and pointed. "And I see it."

He led the way and the others followed. He pulled back some vines to reveal a cave with an archway carved through it.

"A door," John said, stepping into the cave. He took in the Ancient writing beside the doorway and then studied the cave beyond it. "It looks like the only way through the ridge anyway. It runs for miles. I'm going to check it out."

Rodney started to glance down at his scanner, then stumbled back as John stepped forward. "Get it away!" he yelled.

"What is it?" Teyla asked, turning to rush to Rodney's side.

John tried to turn, but his hands were held fast, something pulling him forward, a deep aching pain flashing through them. When he looked, there was a strange bluish ripple around his hands. "Uh, guys..."

"Bee! It's a bee. I'm allergic. Deathly allergic." Rodney was stumbling back, dodging, eyes wide with panic.

John was fighting his own panic as some force dragged him forward, his arms, burning with pain, disappearing into nothingness. He slid forward, his foot and knee vanishing.

"Hold still!" Lorne was yelling at Rodney, swatting at the air.

"Don't do that! You'll make it angry."

John was trying to keep his head out of the... whatever it was, in so much pain he almost couldn't speak. "Guys, help!" he gasped, then lost the battle, falling forward through the doorway.

Lorne clapped his hands together, grimacing as the bee in its death throes stung him. "There! It's dead, McKay. Let's... Where's Sheppard?"

The three turned to the doorway where John had been. The cave on the other side was empty.

"Doctor Sheppard," Lorne called out, then clicked his radio and repeated the page.

Rodney glanced down at his scanner and took in the readings. "Oh, crap!"

Lorne turned and strode toward the doorway.

"Wait!" Rodney called. "There's some sort of energy barrier. You can't go through until we know more."

"Sheppard went through there," Lorne said, turning to him.

"Yes, most likely he did. But we can't go dashing off half-cocked, as much as I'd like to."

Teyla glanced around and then picked up a small stone. "Doctor Sheppard," she said into her radio, "I am going to throw a stone. Please, watch out for it."

They all watched the blue flash as the stone went through the doorway and disappeared.

"It disappeared," Teyla said.

"Just like John," Rodney said, staring at the place where his husband had vanished.

I find it hilarious that no one notices John getting sucked into the time-dilation field because Rodney is panicking over a bee! Poor John ;)

I can't wait to see how John's time will be spent, and Rodney's reaction if certain events come to pass.

Hey! He's allergic! Deathly allergic! One sting, I tell ya! (Actually, I don't know why it is, but if you get a bee indoors, it immediately will head for the one person in the room who's allergic to beestings. Every. Single. Time.)

Yep, definitely somewhat of a cliffie *g*. So, would this be the time dilation field and will John find Teer and co on the other side? It was kinda amusing, but also very much 'OMG. No way!' that no one noticed John's plight, too caught up in Rodney's.

It was good to see Simpson showing a bit of interest, even if it did curtail Radek's plans. I also liked how everyone is rallying round Carson, keeping an eye on him, dragging him away for meals etc. I especially liked Kavanagh setting his watch so he could call hourly, something which seemed necessary if his few disappearances were anything to go by. I like how he can talk to Teyla about things.

Not so sure about he Athosian situation though. It's a shame that they seem to have the same reactions to two men as a lot of people on Earth do :(. Let's just hope it doesn't cause any problems in the long run.

Looking forward to more as always.

Laura.

Oh, I can actually something like this happening in canon. Makes as much sense as Rodney not noticing they had several hours of video...

Great chapter! It's awesome that Carson's friends are keeping an eye on him. They'll help him through and so will Teyla *grins*
I got all teary eyed when Halling took the little girl. I hope the Athosians warm up to John and Rodney's relationship; hopefully it doesn't lead to anything bad.
Ooo can't wait to see what you've got going on for the part like 'Epiphany'. Wonder how similar they'll be...

I love how you totally opposite to fanon assumptions... like all the Athosians being okay with same sex marriages... It's always written as they are oh-so-cool with it... love that you wrote that differently.

And the way you are incorporating the AU-ishness of your fic into the episodes. I really love it!

Thanks for yet another great chapter!

Thanks! Yeah, I don't really see the residents of the Pegasus Galaxy being all that cool with same-sex marriages because there's too great a need for reproduction. The Satedan attitude (so long as you "do your duty to the future" they're okay) is likely the most open I can really see.

Now, of course, planets like the Lord of the Flies planet where the wraith aren't a threat, there's probably a more open attitude.

Oh, thank god, you wrote a way for John to fall into the time-dilation field without making everyone look stupid for not taking basic precautions! And it was comic too, heee!

I adore how you've interwoven integral stuff from the TV episodes into this AU, hon. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing if maybe Laura will come back. Somehow. Or if not, then who's gonna be helping Rodney break code when the events of "Critical Mass" happen?
Damn, sorry to see that John still gets sucked into the time dilation field. I wonder, because of their relationship here, if Rodney's gonna go charging in after him?
Eagerly awaiting the next chapter, love.
